Charred timber cladding is a timeless solution offering unparalleled durability, sustainability, and visual appeal. Originating from the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, charring wood provides a natural resistance to environmental factors, moisture, and decay, ensuring longevity and easy maintenance.
The Charred Timber Process
The process of creating charred timber begins by exposing wood to scorching flames that reach temperatures of approximately 1100 degrees Celsius. This extreme heat treatment requires the highest levels of caution and precision, handled only by specially trained and experienced personnel. The high temperatures bring out the best qualities of the wood, unlocking unique properties through carbonisation.
How Carbonisation Transforms Timber
At the start, intense heat causes various organic components in the wood, primarily sugars abundant in cellulose, to dissolve. This dissolution transforms the timber, making it significantly more resistant to a range of environmental factors. The carbonisation process creates a water-proof layer, enhancing the wood’s durability and longevity.
Benefits of Charred Timber Cladding
With organic compounds removed, the charred timber becomes essentially ‘sterile,’ meaning it is highly resistant to rotting, decay, and decomposition. This sterilisation adds further longevity to an already long-lasting material, while also providing resistance to pests and vermin. The result is a robust and durable material that maintains the beauty and aesthetic appeal of natural wood, offering superior protection and longevity for a wide range of applications.
Longevity and Durability Charring wood creates a protective layer that enhances its resistance to the elements, ensuring your cladding lasts for years.
SustainabilityCharring The charring process is environmentally friendly, reducing the need for chemical treatments and promoting sustainable building practices.
Unique Aesthetics Charred timber has a distinctive appearance, offering deep, rich colours and a unique texture that stands out in any setting.
Easy Installation Our charred timber cladding is designed for straightforward installation, with technical fitting sketches provided to guide you through the process.
Low Maintenance The protective charred layer minimises the need for extensive maintenance, saving you time and effort.
Explore Our Charred Timber Options
We offer a variety of charred timber cladding options to suit your style and project requirements. Choose from different wood types, colours, and profiles to create the perfect look for your building.
European Larch features beautiful natural oiled colours and brushed finishes that highlight its unique grain patterns and earthy tones, making it ideal for interior applications. Highly durable and weather-resistant, it is also an excellent choice for outdoor use.
Charred Nordic Spruce cladding is available in a variety of natural colours, showcasing its unique texture and subtle grain pattern. Suitable for interior finishes, Spruce timber is also durable enough to withstand outdoor elements, making it ideal for exterior applications.
To accurately determine the cladding quantities for your project, follow these steps:
Consult Your Project Team: Reach out to your Architect, Contractor, Fitter, or Quantity Surveyor (QS) to get the precise cladding area needed. They have the expertise to provide this critical measurement.
Provide Timber and Profile Details: Choose the type of timber—Larch or Spruce—and specify the profile type. Options include UYS (shiplap), PAR (rectangular), or Rhombus, with sizes of 95mm, 120mm, or 145mm. The UYS145 profile is commonly used.
Select Colour and Finish: Indicate your preferred cladding colour and finish. This ensures the final product matches your project’s aesthetic requirements.
Include a Wastage Allowance: Factor in a wastage percentage of 5% to 20% to account for offcuts and design adjustments. For UYS profiles, include extra material for overlapping, as noted in the "Overlap Add-On" section of our catalogue.
Specify Delivery Details: Provide the delivery address and Eircode. Note that Larch cladding is available in lengths of 4m, and sometimes 3m or 5m, while Spruce comes in 4.2m, with options from 3.3m to 6m for larger orders.
Once you’ve gathered the necessary information, follow these steps to place your order:
1.
Submit Your Order Details
Confirm the timber type, profile, colour, finish, and quantity. Your quotation will include delivery and standard fixings. If you need additional components like external corners or beams, specify these in your order.
2.
Review Production Timeline
Our typical production time is around 5 weeks. Ensure you’re aware of this timeframe when planning your project.
3.
Receive Technical Support:
After placing your order, we will provide detailed technical support and sketches to assist with the installation and application of the cladding.
Please Note:
